OUR VISION: See how we put our vision into action We are a church:
We would like to think that anyone could find their
place in our church, whatever their age or background. We want to be accessible
and to reflect the rich tapestry of people who have found their home in
this part of London. We believe God values each person and draws people
together across traditional barriers and divisions. BASED ON LOVE, DEVOTION AND ACTION We are not a traditional church in some senses. We don't meet in our own "church" building, and leaders don't wear special clothes or conduct religious ceremonies. But we do take following Jesus seriously, and seek to live out authentic Christianity in the 21st Century on the basis of the teaching and example of Jesus. We believe that the Bible is inspired by God and reveals to us God's word on how to live our lives and how to be church together. The bible is taught in our meetings and is the basis for our activities. We have 3 foundational verses which help to shape and define who we are as a church. Each one gives us one of our key words: Love, Devotion and Action. LOVE: JOHN 13:34-35 "A new commandment I give you that you love one another as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another". DEVOTION: ACTS 2:42 "They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer". ACTION: MATTHEW 28:18-20 "Jesus said to them 'All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I commanded you, and see, I am with you always even to the end of the age'". There is nothing more important in life than knowing the love of Jesus for us, and then seeing that love flow through us and out to the people we have contact with. We want to emulate the devotion of the first Christians and have a passion for the Bible, prayer, fellowship together, and 'breaking of bread' - remembering and benefiting from what Jesus did for us through his death on the cross. We never want to be passive in our faith. We are called to action, having a positive effect on people whether locally or globally, attracting them to join us in following Jesus, and becoming one of his disciples. FURTHER STUDY: LOVE: John 3:16, Mark 12:30, 1 Corinthians 13:13 OLD TESTAMENT BACKGROUND: Isaiah chapters 58-62 WHERE EVERYONE IS ENCOURAGED TO FOLLOW JESUS ACTIVELY There is nothing more urgent or important in life than following Jesus. The best way to live and the greatest adventure in life is found in following him. We are to live in relationship with Jesus in such a way that he can transform us from the inside out. But what exactly does that mean? What will it look like in the 21st Century? Well in some ways it can be very diverse. We are all unique and need to work out what it means in our own situations and circumstances. However, God has given us the Bible and we can look into it and see how Jesus began to train men and women to follow him. The important keys are there to be discovered and put into practice in our lives. We have developed a framework for discipleship called "FOLLOWING JESUS". Six areas are identified, and our aim is to encourage everyone to fulfil God's calling on their lives and follow Jesus in these areas. Click on FOLLOWING JESUS to find out more.
LOCAL: We are involved in our community: living locally, working in schools, hospitals, shops or businesses. We are making a difference in our area, wanting the best for people. The focal point of our work in the community is the Here For Good Centre on the High Street in Sydenham. A variety of activities take place there. To find out more go to COMMUNITY - HERE FOR GOOD. LONDON: We are excited about living in a major world capital, with its rich history, and its place on the world scene today. We are having an impact for good on our city in many spheres of life, linking with other churches and Christian groups. We particularly look to make a contribution in the Borough of Lewisham. NATIONAL: Being in the capital we can exercise our right to campaign on issues to Central Government. We link with churches in Essex and East Anglia. GLOBAL: We believe that God has a heart for the whole world. We are engaged in demonstrating the love of God in practical ways in different parts of the world and in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. We support a number of workers overseas and get behind various projects such a the Kiwoko Hospital in central Uganda and a crisis pregnancy centre in Romania. |
